I'm immediately attracted to the cover of this book-look at those centerpiece beads! Simply Modern Jewelry shows that even a beginner can create beautiful boutique quality jewelry. Geared toward the novice beader, author Danielle Fox (Editor of Stringing magazine) walks you thru the process of creating your gorgeous jewelry.

The book starts with a chapter about shopping for beads and supplies, discusses tools you will need, a comprehensive how-to for the techniques used, then goes onto the 30 stylish projects that make up the book. The projects are broken down into 5 categories: Find Your Inspiration; Mix It Up; Play with Symmetry; Experiment with Sizing; and Easy Does It. On the Interweave site, you can preview the book and see more gorgeousness. The projects and instructions will build beginning jewelry makers skills along with confidence. These are simple yet chic jewelry projects people will love to wear. The selection of the beads and supplies used are what REALLY make these designs stand out, and make the book so wonderful. Everything in here is WOW, the color combinations are amazing and make the pieces just pop! Most of the beads and findings are really amazing too. There is also an extensive resource section in the back. I really appreciate seeing books that include sources other than the big 'name' bead suppliers,. I think we need to support the little guys too!

One thing that I loved about this book was Ms. Fox encourages the jewelry crafter to look around themselves for inspiration and to use it to personalize their creations. This is something that a lot of books for beginners don't seem to talk about. I think if you can encourage people to think for them selves from the start, it will help them grow as artists.

Another thing I loved: The projects use quality findings, beads and supplies. Flip through and you will see artist made lamp work beads, sterling silver clasps, vintage crystals, and gold fill wire. Using beautiful supplies make even a simple strung necklace look like you just bought it at an exclusive boutique.

I really recommend this to beginners as a wonderful book for your library. I think more experienced crafters will enjoy it as well for the inspiration factor.
