What Are U Up To Today? Do Over Jewelry Challenge Blog Hop and Giveaway

Todays "What are U up to Wednesday" post is also part of a Do Over Blog Hop.  Jeannie of JKD Jewelry posted a challenge on her blog last month - a Do Over Challenge. She offered those who wanted to participate an old, boring piece of her jewelry for FREE (her words) and our challenge was to rework it into something a little more interesting.

Since I love make over's, I thought it would be a fun challenge to take part of.
Sadly I have no "before" Photos of the pieces she sent me.  A curious 5 yr old, playing with a camera she knew she wasn't allowed to touch and OOOPS-everything got deleted.......... edit-I did find the earrings before photo on my iPhone, so at least I have that to put up!

EDIT:I FOUND A BEFORE PHOTO!!!!!! THERE WAS ONE PHOTO ON MY "BIG' CAMERA AKA THE SLR DIGITAL I ONLY USE FOR WEBSITE PHOTOS. WOO HOO!
Here's the before necklace:

Jeannie had sent a simple strung necklace of 7  large resin and wood beads, with a bit of GF chain, large connector and small lobster clasp. It was pretty but understated along with these matching dangly earrings with tiny pearl and onyx beads.  Jeannie also included a note:

"I started making jewelry long, long ago and this piece is something I made when I did not know any better.  I did not know what an art bead was.  I did not know what I was doing.  The craftsmanship is not there and each piece reminds me how far I have come.  It brings me great joy to pass it on to you and breathe new life into it."

I can totally relate to her note. I also have a box of "old" stuff that I've slowly been cannibalizing for parts.  I really love the beads on her necklace,I've never seen anything like them before. They are newsprint fabric covered in resin.  Since they are statement pieces on their own, I wanted to make something really bold with them. I tried a few different necklace combinations then settled on making a bracelet with them- a bold, Rock Star bracelet.

I used five of the six resin beads from the necklace and took apart the gold chain to use as jump rings.  I wire wrapped the beads on steel wire and attached them to a triple strand of gunmetal chain from my stash.  I used the large gold connector from Jeannie's necklace for the closure with a big lobster claw clasp. To add some zing, I added long chain fringe at the clasp. I also attached the pearl and onyx beads from Jeannie's earrings to the ends of the chain.  It is certainly a conversation piece now.

And since Jeannie was so generous in letting us play with her jewelry and turn it into something new, I'd like to pay it forward and give this away to one of my blog readers. If you'd like to win this, leave a comment here about something you've made but later done a "do over" on, or which of the other blog hop "Do Over" jewelry pieces you liked.  I'll pick a lucky winner on Wednesday June 1st!

A huge thank you goes out to Jeannie for putting this blog hop together and allowing us to re-work her creations.   Please check out her blog for pics of the redo's for the people participating but do not have blogs and be sure visit the other girls on the blog hop tour:

I really like what you did with your do over piece! those resin news print beads are so cool! I have been beading since the 70's so I do have a lot of things I should do over.......just haven't got one that sticks in my mind that I have done over...

Wow! You completely reworked this piece. Too bad you don't have the before picture because this is quite a transformation. I like how you positioned them parallel to each other. Then the dripping chain..CooL! I hope whoever wins will appreciate it.
THank you so much Barbe for participating.

Rock on Barbe!!! This is awesome and so very "you" in design. I've often done a "do over" where I've started a collage and then taken pieces off it and started in a completely new direction -- and this after things have already been glued on. Sometimes it's easy to just gesso over everything..but then I don't always take the easy way out!!

I also love with Lori (Pretty Things) did with the necklace that was sent to her to "do over".

What a fun idea! I just love your made-over rock star bracelet!! The beads look very interesting and I don't think I've seen anything like them.

I, too, have made over many of my first pieces. One I'm doing right now was previously made with large Swarovski Crystal beads, and were just too heavy. Really, nobody needs that many crystals around their wrist. I think I will intersperse (is that a word?) a few crystals with various kinds of chain and add some pearls to lighten up the piece.

cool bracelet. I am too tired to think right now and I am only part of the way through the hop so I can't answer your question at the moment :-)

I love your work, too bad we don't get to see the original, I'm sure we wouldn't recognize it as the same pieces you made.

Great do-over! I love this bracelet! I enjoyed Jeannie's challenge so much, I have accumulated a bag of 80's jewelry from my jewelry box that I am hoping to breathe new life into!

I love what you did with your newspaper beads. I also love cannibalizing. I feel so good about what I have saved. The chains on that bracelet are so fabulous and really update the piece.

This turned out so cool! I've been making increasingly jumbly pieces lately with lots going on, so I'm cannibalizing some of the "classic" pieces I've made, which no longer suit me. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi, I have do-overs all the time! some early bracelets with colorful little ceramic fishies on stretch cord were taken apart to make a necklace and bracelet set that my cousin bought...yeah!
