It's too damn sultry in here.

Remember that quote from "Throw Momma from the Train"?  I've wilted from the heat and humidity.  Its been my mantra the last couple of day and the next 2 days are going to be worse.  I don't have central air and only 3 of the 12 windows in my 2nd floor apt don't open.....As bad as I feel, I really worry for my animals.   My elderly cat has taken to sleeping in the shower, and Bettie looks as miserable as I feel.  Its impossible to do anything. I thought about a window air conditioner but this apt is large with 12ft ceilings....and the electric bill would be insane.  Instead I'm going to use my misery to fuel me to look for a new apartment this week.

And what day did I decide to go to the flea market this week? If you guessed today, give yourself a gold star. I woke up later than I had planned and even with the hour drive I made it up there around 8:30.  It was pretty muggy then and just got worse. I took my red silk parasol so I didn't get burnt or sunstroke and it elicited quite a few stares from people.   I don't think I've ever been to a flea market in California where there weren't at least 8 ladies toting parasols. But then again, I have to keep reminding myself "I'm not in California anymore."

It was a good flea market but next time I'll get there by 7am.  The crowd was already heavy by the time I got there which made looking difficult.  The junk jewelry selection was sad and over priced so all I got were some watches to tear apart, a metal industrial box with 3 drawers in it, a pretty tarnished silver mesh bag  and a gorgeous turquoise enameled trinket bowl for my vanity. The main thing that made slogging through the sun and humidity  worth it all were a couple of small embossed photo albums with a few 40's thru 60's of African American photos inside.

Ethnic vintage photos are hard to come by, and I was absolutely chuffed to find this little stash of them.  I  can't wait to go through them all this week and scan them so I can start using them in my work.

Now onto this week's Bead Bloggers links!

The Queen and her Industrial Chic Crown

Now that my Industrial Chic sample has arrived at the ICE Resin® headquarters, I can share what I made with you all.  Jen asked that the SLK Creative Team make something "a little over the top" to show what can be done with the Industrial Chic charms and findings. Hearing that,  I wanted to really make something unexpected so sat down with a notebook to brainstorm. I had a number of different ideas but finally settled on one that I thought really exemplified the product and its creator.   Because Susan is the "Queen" of found object jewelry and resin, I created a mixed media crown for her showcasing the Industrial Chic charms and pendants.

I created the base of the crown is made out of scrap metal, then started auditioning the parts to see what looked best where.  That took the longest  amount of time, because I needed it to be visually balanced and colorful.  Once I figured out what went where, I started drilling and attaching the bits with screw rivets and some wire wrapping.

I'm really pleased with it and so happy the Queen loved it too!  If you are going to be at the Bead & Button Show, you can see this in person and try it on if you ask nicely!

IF you don't know what the Bead & Button show it's an out of this world, jewelry makers mecca!  With more than 14,000 jewelry enthusiasts from around the globe flocking to the 2011 Bead&Button Show for a week of classes, socializing, and shopping, you KNOW its an amazing event! This year's show features more than 700 classes and workshops. Susan will be teaching there and the ICE Resin booth will have all the goodies you need to get started with resin. The Show runs June 4-12, at the Frontier Airlines Center in Milwaukee. You can register in advance and learn more about that show  at:  www.BeadAndButtonShow.com

What Are U Up To Today? Do Over Jewelry Challenge Blog Hop and Giveaway

Todays "What are U up to Wednesday" post is also part of a Do Over Blog Hop.  Jeannie of JKD Jewelry posted a challenge on her blog last month - a Do Over Challenge. She offered those who wanted to participate an old, boring piece of her jewelry for FREE (her words) and our challenge was to rework it into something a little more interesting.

Since I love make over's, I thought it would be a fun challenge to take part of.
Sadly I have no "before" Photos of the pieces she sent me.  A curious 5 yr old, playing with a camera she knew she wasn't allowed to touch and OOOPS-everything got deleted.......... edit-I did find the earrings before photo on my iPhone, so at least I have that to put up!

EDIT:I FOUND A BEFORE PHOTO!!!!!! THERE WAS ONE PHOTO ON MY "BIG' CAMERA AKA THE SLR DIGITAL I ONLY USE FOR WEBSITE PHOTOS. WOO HOO!
Here's the before necklace:

Jeannie had sent a simple strung necklace of 7  large resin and wood beads, with a bit of GF chain, large connector and small lobster clasp. It was pretty but understated along with these matching dangly earrings with tiny pearl and onyx beads.  Jeannie also included a note:

"I started making jewelry long, long ago and this piece is something I made when I did not know any better.  I did not know what an art bead was.  I did not know what I was doing.  The craftsmanship is not there and each piece reminds me how far I have come.  It brings me great joy to pass it on to you and breathe new life into it."

I can totally relate to her note. I also have a box of "old" stuff that I've slowly been cannibalizing for parts.  I really love the beads on her necklace,I've never seen anything like them before. They are newsprint fabric covered in resin.  Since they are statement pieces on their own, I wanted to make something really bold with them. I tried a few different necklace combinations then settled on making a bracelet with them- a bold, Rock Star bracelet.

I used five of the six resin beads from the necklace and took apart the gold chain to use as jump rings.  I wire wrapped the beads on steel wire and attached them to a triple strand of gunmetal chain from my stash.  I used the large gold connector from Jeannie's necklace for the closure with a big lobster claw clasp. To add some zing, I added long chain fringe at the clasp. I also attached the pearl and onyx beads from Jeannie's earrings to the ends of the chain.  It is certainly a conversation piece now.

And since Jeannie was so generous in letting us play with her jewelry and turn it into something new, I'd like to pay it forward and give this away to one of my blog readers. If you'd like to win this, leave a comment here about something you've made but later done a "do over" on, or which of the other blog hop "Do Over" jewelry pieces you liked.  I'll pick a lucky winner on Wednesday June 1st!

A huge thank you goes out to Jeannie for putting this blog hop together and allowing us to re-work her creations.   Please check out her blog for pics of the redo's for the people participating but do not have blogs and be sure visit the other girls on the blog hop tour:

The To Do list never ends

steampunk discs- photo by barbe saint john

Ever feel like no matter what you do, time is running out on some project or deadline? Thats me right now.  So many things to finish, and I actually got a good start on most of them, but am still moving like I'm stuck waist deep in mud.  Good news is that I'm actually FINISHING some things in time and hopefully will get a chance to work/play on some ideas JUST FOR ME soon. And maybe enjoy some quiet nature like this peaceful photo.

Tomorrow is the "Jewelry Makeover Blog Hop" headed by Jeannie Dukic. Jeannie graciously donated some of here older jewelry creations to a group of other artists as part of a "Do Over Challenge".  I loved what she sent me and can't wait to show you all what I did with it!!! Be sure to stop back tomorrow to see what I made and visit the other girls on the blog hop tour:

Deadlines, Deadlines, Deadlines.................

WHEW!!! Last week flew by! Like everyone else, I got waylaid posting because Blogger was down so I didn't get the chance. Luckily its working fine today (fingers crossed!)and hopefully Blogger got all the bugs fixed. I've been using Blogger for about 3 or 4 yrs, without a problem so I shouldn't complain about it. It's been dependable and I'm grateful for it.

Last week was trying to create, document and submit classes for 2012 art retreats. This week I'm working on a sample for Susan's booth at Bead and Button with her Industrial Chic products. I can't show you what it is yet, because its a surprise.

I've put up a teaser photo showing some of what I'm going to be working with. I have the general idea, now trying to get all the bits and pieces to come together. Lets just say its going to be a little over the top. ;-) I'm going to ask Susan to model it for me when she gets it, and I'll post a pic when she does.

This weekend, by chance we happened upon a small fossil and mineral show down near Center Market. Small but with some great vendors. I got some crazy big black tooth the guys said was a fossil horse tooth and a few small amethyst geode hunks.

I can't wait to be able to sit down and make some massive rings with these! I wish now I had bought all of them, because they are so pretty.  I did get a few fluorite ones in Tuscon I still haven't had the chance to work with too. I'd love to own one of those giant geodes I saw in Tucson, the ones that were 6 ft tall. Someday!

Happy Mother's Day

Hope all you Mom's out there had a wonderful Mothers Day and were well spoiled by your loved ones! I got a Starbucks Green Tea Latte (impossible to find here!) and a box of Cinnabon NOM NOM NOM!!! But to top it off, Bettie left me a little "present" pile in front of the French doors to the back porch. HOPEFULLY none of you got such a 'personal' gift from your kid or animal today LOL.

It was a gorgeous day today, and I spent it inside doing resin. I'm finally feeling like some energy has shifted and things are starting (FINALLY!) to move forward in life. I'm starting to feel unstuck and my creativity coming back. I won't worry about how many months I need to make up for, just go forward from today. I'm a little worried about my studio though, none of the 4 windows open up at all...Not a good thing when you work with paints, solvents, fixatives, varnish, glues, industrial epoxy, enamel, and soldering...... Don't want to poison myself or the animals by not having ventilation, so I'm hoping that I get a new workspace very very soon although I haven't started looking for one yet.

And speaking of looking, here are this weeks bead bloggers for your viewing pleasure!

Wanna get Published? Lark Books 500 Beaded Jewelry Call for Entries

People often ask me say "HOW do you get published?" which I think really means "How can I get published too".  I think people think there is some magical incantation one must do, or maybe you have know someone, or have a hookup.. While I think those things would all help, they really aren't necessary.  All kidding aside, there's a really simple answer to getting published. It's as simple as " submit when I see the call for entries."
You can't get published if you don't submit, and here's a chance for you. I just got an email from my friends at Lark Books and they are looking for entries for its 500 Beaded Jewelry book.

They wrote:  "We'd like to encourage submissions as widely as possible, and especially to create a diverse, international pool of entries. The postmark deadline for submissions is July 15, 2011, and we are encouraging early entries of recent, unpublished work."

If you do beadwork and would like to get published, this is a chance my loves!!!! Go to the website for the guidelines and entry forms.   Like I always say "if you don't take a chance, you don't stand a chance!", so send something in and see what happens!  Also key to geting published is to always READ the guidelines and requirements carefully and fully. If you don't follow the guidelines which differ from publication to publication,  you could possibly disqualify your entry and no one wants that to happen. So read, read and read again.

Please also be sure to connect with the Lark Jewelry & Beading Facebook fan page for community news, project updates, and exhibit information.

Rainy Sunday perfect for browsing the Inspired Remnants Blog Hop Tour and Beadbloggers

Spring is here!!! Pink Dogwoods and Lilac bushes are in bloom everywhere, its so gorgeous!
While it's a gloomy, overcast, cold rainy day here in the Ohio Valley today, yesterday was overcast but warm and pleasant.  Bettie got to run around Oglebay Park, curiously sniffing all the grass deer had been walking on, then stopped by the thrift store and picked up a 50's china cabinet (woo hoo!) then had a yummy pizza from Vocelli's for dinner. All those carbs yesterday combined with today's weather is making my fibro rear its ugly head. So because I'm so low energy today, I am going to curl up with a pot of jasmine green tea and my laptop to do some long overdue blog reading.

First on the list - Kerin Gale's Inspired Remnants, Curious Dreams: Mixed Media Projects in Epoxy Clay blog hop book tour which starts today.  Kerin's book is all about working with epoxy clay, something I love and use alot of in my own work.  On the blog hop tour there are 18 stops, 117+ giveaways, online workshops, amazing eye candy, new artists to meet and more fun.   Join her facebook fan page, and the blog for more eye candy, the full blog hop schedule and details about future giveaways.  You can join the facebook fan group and post pics of your own epoxy clay creations too.

Kerin's book is a MUST have if you are curious about working with epoxy clay. It's easy to use, and so so SO much fun to work with!    In my "Ancient Futuristic Steampunk Art Goddess" art doll class we use it to make fantastical figures like this.

Kerin and I both recommend and use Aves Studio Apoxy Clay and Apoxie Sculpt. so be sure to stop by the Aves Studio website too!

Next up on the "to read" list, are my fellow bead bloggers. LOTS Of wonderful eye candy and inspiration to help pass this dreary Sunday.
